Dermal Fillers

Everyone knows that regular exercise and a balanced diet are two important ways to help stay healthy, feel well and look good. Nothing can stop time passing and, whether we like it or not, we all grow older and it shows in our faces. Frown lines and wrinkles are a normal part of the aging process, but they can make you look tired, angry or older than you really are.

The structure of the skin changes with time and it becomes less elastic and flexible. There are fewer fat cells in the lower layers [the dermis] of the skin and it becomes more transparent whilst the oil and sweat glands, that help to keep the skin supple, become less active. Muscles in the face also begin to sag and the skin becomes creased and folded. Older skin is drier and it renews itself less quickly than younger skin. All these factors affect how facial skin looks.

Ageing is a natural process and many people want to feel good for their age with a natural look and seek out ways to help them achieve that.

Healthy looking skin needs moisture, not just at the surface, but also at every level. There is a naturally occurring compound in the skin called hyaluronic acid that holds on to water. The levels of hyaluronic acid decrease with age and largely determine skin shape and volume.

One way to treat wrinkles and lines in the face is to inject extra hyaluronic acid to replenish the levels and to hydrate the skin. As a result, skin volume and tone are increased and lines are reduced.

Various fillers and treatments for facial lines are available and you should discuss the differences with Dr Prynne.

Hydra Fill® SoftLine™ and Hydra Fill® SoftLine™ Max contain hyaluronic acid like that found naturally in the skin, no allergy testing is required and they are suitable for all skin types.

What happens?

Treatment with Hydra Fill® SoftLine™ can take as little as 15 minutes but usually takes longer. A local anaesthetic may be used in the area to be treated. Using a very fine needle, Dr Prynne will inject Hydra Fill® SoftLine™ beneath the surface of the skin. Hydra Fill® SoftLine™ may be placed deeper to treat more severe lines.

After treatment, slight swelling and small red marks may appear but will fade over the following hours. The results are not permanent but in most cases last for 6 to 12 months so repeat treatment will be required.

Side Effects

Reactions are usually temporary in nature. As with all biodegradable fillers, local inflammatory reactions such as redness and swelling may be accompanied by temporary irritation or pain on application of pressure, after placement. Lumps or nodules may appear at the injection site.

Rare cases of necrosis [localised tissue damage] in the glabella [frown] area, abscesses, granuloma [skin nodules] and hypersensitivity have been recorded after injections of hyaluronic acid.

How can I look after my skin?

Here are a few simple rules to follow to help encourage healthy skin.

  • Use sunscreens every day when going out in the sun.
  • Don't smoke - it is linked to premature wrinkles.
  • Eat a healthy diet including fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Apply moisturisers to help keep skin smooth and moisturised.

Some people may want to consider further non-surgical treatment such as creams, lotions, peels and re-surfacing.

Whilst there are some preparations available from a pharmacist, other treatments may only be provided by a doctor or nurse.
